GAMES CAN HELP YOU REGULATE EMOTIONS BY ENGAGING YOUR IMAGINATION.34
Video games often involve picking an avatar, a name, and playing the same scene multiple times or as different characters in order to uncover hidden truths and rewards. These types of make-believe provide a valuable real-life skill: the ability to imagine different versions of yourself and of your life. Part of emotional self-regulation is about changing how you see or feel about a situation, and that can lead you to change how you behave, ultimately empowering you to change yourself or your life. All of this is hard work, but it relies on a critical first step: imagining that things could be different. Itâs about imagining that you could have felt differently, that you or someone else could have behaved differently. Playing games builds that critical muscle of imagination.
